InternetNZ adds 22% to the wholesale cost of .nz domains
Whenever you register or renew a .nz domain with us, we pay the wholesale price to InternetNZ. It’s easily the biggest component of the super-low price that we offer you, and for five years it hasn’t changed.
That happy situation ends on 1 July 2025, when InternetNZ is increasing their cut by 22%. That’s more than our entire margin!
We are publishing this news now to give you plenty of notice of the changes to come. We were surprised when the announcement was made late last week and we are still working out exactly what changes we will make in response.
The smartest move is to pay today’s price now
Rather than wait to hear exactly how bad the damage will be when retailers like us face higher costs, you can take advantage of today’s price right now.
By renewing existing domains for as many years as possible, you can extend your ownership of .nz
domains well into the future. However much time you lock in, it will come at today’s price of $21.50/yr (+GST).
Similarly, if you know there are domains that you want to have control of in the second half of 2025, now is the time to grab them.
A bit of background: InternetNZ
As well as setting the wholesale price for .nz domains, InternetNZ also makes the rules and regulations that we all have to stick to, and runs the technical system that makes the entire .nz namespace work properly.
They say that their infrastructure costs have gone up by 70%, and resource costs by 30%, since wholesale prices last changed. The total number of .nz domains has not grown by anywhere near as much - in fact, there have been periods of shrinkage this decade. Increased costs without an increase in domains to spread them across is a recipe for higher prices.
We’ll publish our own price update when we know the news
We’re proud to be one of the lowest-cost .nz domain providers in New Zealand. We plan to stay as competitive as possible. There are no new prices for us to announce quite yet, but as soon as there is we will publish an update here on our blog.
Until then, today’s price of $21.50/yr (+GST) is there for the taking. Over to you.
